In the late 1990s, a young Gurukiran arrived in Gandhinagar to assist friends with film music. Now, after twenty-five years, the music director and composer reflects on the changes in the industry, stating, "Initially, I faced challenges in being accepted here as I did not conform to the traditional image expectations." In a recent conversation, he shares insights on the pressure of creating hit songs, how he established his own unique style, and more. Recalling a nostalgic moment during the re-release of the film "Upendra," Gurukiran recounts visiting theaters to gauge audience reactions in the early stages of his career. Despite finding success early on, he preferred returning to Mangaluru until his work on "Upendra." The overwhelming response to the film's music led to significant financial gains, yet Gurukiran was not initially inclined to permanently settle in Bengaluru. It wasn't until after working on "Upendra" and "Chitra" that he decided to make the move. Initially, music wasn't a serious career consideration for him, as his primary aspiration was to become a singer. Gurukiran reflects on the music industry today, noting that while it is more open to new talent, sustaining success remains a formidable challenge. In today's competitive music industry, it's no longer sufficient to solely focus on creating music; promotion is just as crucial to ensure your work reaches the audience. Requests now often include demands to make a song trending on platforms like reels, as if hits can be manufactured on demand. This is why I have chosen to slow down and only take on projects that truly inspire me. I find fulfillment in the fact that my music, featured in films such as A, Kariya, and Upendra, retains its fresh appeal even after many years. At this stage of my career, I prioritize the joy of creating enduring pieces," shares Gurukiran.
Gurukiran reflects on his journey, sharing, "During my early days, I faced challenges being accepted, with people doubting if I fit the conventional mold." Despite establishing himself as a successful music director, it took time for the industry to recognize his talent. Initially, he was not taken seriously, partly due to his unconventional appearance. In an industry where music directors were expected to conform to a specific look, Gurukiran stood out. However, with notable successes like Apthamitra, perceptions shifted in his favor. He takes pride in the fact that a significant portion of his work has been successful, with many films having notable long runs in theaters. Gurukiran emphasizes the pivotal role of music in attracting audiences to cinemas.
